The first part of the film relates to the state's coast, north and south, point of disembarkation of the last Africans arrived as slaves in Brazil, and presents the quilombola communities of Bracuí, in Angra dos Reis, and Rasa, in Buzios. The second part goes up the Serra do Mar, arrives at the Vale do Paraíba, the old coffee valley in the XIX century, where most of the recently arrived were addressed. There, representatives of communities of Barra do Piraí, Quilombo São José da Serra and Duas Barras are interviewed. The third and final part goes down the sierra and reaches the Baixada Fluminense, especially Nova Iguaçu, Mesquita, Duque de Caxias and São João do Meriti, where many of the descendants of the last slaves headed, at different moments of the XX century, in search for better job opportunities. In all regions are presented the relations between jongos, calangos and folias de reis, as family patrimonies, with emphasis on poetry and on the challenges present at these manifestations.
